Juniper
'Cause I don't want you to leave I wanna tell you good dreams And with a little luck you can stay 'Cause I don't want you to leave
Juniper took tentative steps around the marketplace, eyes fixated on all the wares in front of her. Sweet Arceus, there were so many! How was she supposed to figure out what she was supposed to bring into a dungeon, anyway? She'd never taken a job before and she wanted to be sure she was prepared but with such a limited amount of money, she wasn't sure she'd make the right choices. She knew how dangerous dungeons could be, and a good shopping trip could be the difference between life and death out there...
Her eyes flicked over to the Ice Stone. She almost had enough money, and with the strength of a Ninetales she'd surely conquer any dungeon! "But what was it Mom said about evolving again?" She scrunched up her face as if that would help her remember. "Oh yeah, Ninetales don't learn any new moves..." Her shoulders slumped in defeat. Powder Snow and Aurora Veil weren't enough to carry her through the tougher challenges. She wasn't even sure they'd get her through the rookie dungeons! What was a Pokemon without a team even supposed to do??
She took a deep breath and shook her head. She couldn't believe she let her insecurities get the better of her for that long. She lifted her head with a determined grin and began evaluating the prices of the items that looked the most useful--Oran Berries, Apples, Reviver Seeds definitely, maybe some Slumber Orbs? There were plenty of essentials here, most at prices even rookies like herself could afford. Everything was okay. She was only here because there weren't any available jobs at the moment, and while she didn't see that coming she really couldn't be surprised that a city full of explorers would have a lot of competition for exploration jobs. Perhaps she was lucky she didn't have the opportunity to rush into a dungeon ill-prepared. This was a good day after all.

❝ THROW A KICK SO QUICK THAT I LEAVE YOU IN THE GUTTER ❞
Luc liked to visit the market. In general, she preferred to get her items via dungeons, but there was nothing like pokemon pressed elbow to ass to make you feel socialized. The salandit loved others, and she wasn’t afraid of greeting strangers that she’d never seen before. It was while she was talking with one stall owner, tail swishing back and forth, that she noticed a new face. While Luc wouldn’t claim to know everyone in Elysia, she figured that she knew enough explorers and hunters that a new face was worth exploring. Especially a new face that looked a little worried!
With a casual sway to her steps (as much as she could manage when she walked on four legs), the pokemon approached Juniper with a bob of the head. “Hey there! You look like new blood, to me. Ain’t seen ya around before, at least.” Luc seemed to have no issue with addressing the alolan vulpix even though they clearly didn’t know each other. “Tell me, you an explorer or a hunter? Not a hunter, I figure- I’d probably know about you if you were! Course, I’m no genius- can’t say I know every new face that passes by.” Considering that she hadn’t even been in Elysia that long, it was no wonder everyone was new to the salandit.
“Whatcha shopping for? Looking to go in a dungeon? Aw, I don’t have the brains to prepare properly before I stumble into one. I figure the world will provide me with what I need. So far, it’s done me well. I doubt I’ll change even when I inevitably faint and need to get my sorry ass dragged back here.” She snickered, resting her head on one of the stall tables as she eyed the wares on display. “Should probably get myself something nice to reward myself. Y’know. In honor of me being me and all that.” Luc cackled again.

Juniper
'Cause I don't want you to leave I wanna tell you good dreams And with a little luck you can stay 'Cause I don't want you to leave
It took a moment for Juniper to realize the Salandit was talking to her and not one of the Pokemon standing next to her. Normally she'd be startled, but perhaps because she was looking for advice from a more experienced adventurer anyway, she couldn't help but feel relaxed and at ease.
"Oh yes, very new," she nodded. "I'm having trouble finding work at the moment, and I thought I'd take the time to get prepared while I wait. Although it is a bit hard to prepare when I'm not even quite sure what I'm preparing for... but I'm sure it's not that big of a deal! Dungeons are dungeons and will probably need the same basic equipment regardless." She chuckled a bit. After saying it out loud, her previous worrying seemed so silly.
"I'm an explorer!" Her chest puffed out a teeny bit with pride. Was that the first time she'd said it aloud? It felt so good to say. It felt right. "I take it you're a hunter, then? I thought about it, but I think ultimately my skills are better for bringing lost Pokemon home than bringing outlaws to justice. It wasn't a fun choice to make but I'm satisfied with my decision."
Juniper laughed at the Salandit's joke. Was it a joke? It didn't matter. She'd never heard of a Pokemon rewarding themselves for being themselves, and while it felt like a joke to her she rather liked the concept. Seemed like a good way to get yourself in higher spirits. "It's good to know that works for you, it makes me much less anxious about my own shopping. I've been afraid I'll spend too much money on the wrong items." Her eyes darted around the market place for a minute, still trying to catch her breath from laughing. "As for your reward... how about a TM, yeah? It's not only a nice gift, it's practical!" She sat down with her paws neatly in front of her, pleased with her suggestion. She'd keep that in mind, too. Maybe when she got to feeling down on herself she'd come back to reward herself with a TM as well.
She was in far better spirits than she was earlier. This Salandit had a very enjoyable presence, and hearing from someone more experienced that it was okay to be reckless did wonders for the anxiety she'd felt earlier. "My name's Juniper. What would you like me to call you?" She was careful not to directly ask for her name, she didn't want to ask for too much information that the Salandit might prefer to keep private. She was probably being way too cautious since this was just a marketplace and this Salandit was just a hunter and not, say, an international spy or anything. But for some reason it just felt right to give her the space to give a nickname rather than her actual name.

❝ THROW A KICK SO QUICK THAT I LEAVE YOU IN THE GUTTER ❞
Luc could appreciate forethought. She just didn’t have much herself. So, when Juniper spoke about needing the same basic equipment regardless of dungeon, she found herself nodding along. “That makes sense. I already told you my method, which is awfully different! Worked out pretty well when I was a kid, but then again, I had Mom and Dad to come fish me out of trouble whenever I got too far.” The salandit looked misty-eyed for a second with nostalgia, before turning her attention back to the alolan vulpix. “Explorer, huh? Considered that for most of my youth, but y’know, things change! Guess I just was meant to be a little more vicious than your average pokemon.” She laughed at that, hiding a small spark of envy. In her opinion - her possibly wrong opinion - there was something more carefree about being an explorer. But she didn’t regret her decision.
“Yeah, I’m a hunter. Not the best one out there, but I’m one of the one’s Elysia’s got, so I guess the city has to deal with that!” Another cackle. “Anyways, my advice might be to venture out into a dungeon with no job first, to get your experience up. S’what I did, anyway! And, don’t you dare tell anyone this, but I’m scared of Corsola Cove. All those water types...gives me the shakes just thinking about ‘em! I’d rather take my chance with the Greengrove than tangle with those suckers!” The salandit let out a soft ‘brrr’ noise to show her displeasure with the idea of those who had super-effective typing over her.
Juniper’s worry had Luc laughing softly, though not unkindly. “Worried you’ll up and find yourself with twenty apples and no oran berries?” She rolled her neck. “I wouldn’t be overly concerned. The meadows and the cove aren’t too long of dungeons. If you go at it alone, you’ll probably find the stairs before you get too hungry! Course, parties mean longer time in dungeons, which means hungry pokemon, so if you’re looking to venture out with friends, I’d pack plenty of apples!” The mention of a TM had her tilting her head to the side. “Shoot, that’s not a bad idea. Might save up and get me flame charge or fire blast. A real kick-ass fire move!
The alolan vulpix’s next words gained a razorsharp smile. “Aw, you can call me whatever you like. Hot Stuff, for example! Maybe Most Beautiful Salandit To Ever Grace This Planet!” She laughed, shaking her head. “Naw, but the name is Lucine! I go by Luc. Pleasure to meet you, Juniper!” She stuck her nose in a pile of scarves to observe them closer, snorting a bit of smoke as she pulled away. “S’pose I could get one of those, but I’m worried I’d get them messy and everyone’d be like ‘aw, Luc, what’d you go and get everything covered in soot for?’ Not that I particularly care about being messy. Messes can be fun!”
“In general?” She began, wanting to deal out a little bit more of advice, “I’d say to just have fun with it. Obviously, when you’re on a job you’ve got a thing to focus on, but hell, it ain’t a good idea to go into a dungeon super serious! There’ll be trials. Tribulations. All that good stuff. It’s best to take everything with a grin.” Luc grew serious suddenly. “Less of course you’re dealing with a known criminal. Then you wanna be on your guard. Hopefully a cute little thing like you won’t have to worry about that, though!” 594 words

Juniper
'Cause I don't want you to leave I wanna tell you good dreams And with a little luck you can stay 'Cause I don't want you to leave
Juniper grinned, her eyes glimmering with admiration. "Oh, I'm sure you're an excellent hunter!" She wasn't sure why, this Salandit didn't seem that much more experienced than her, but something about the amount of confidence she had in herself made her feel wiser than she probably actually was. Juniper's ears perked up when she heard advice, carefully listening to everything. "Huh, I never would've thought to go by myself first but it makes a lot of sense!" She winked and gave her companion a playful nudge. "Perhaps you aren't as reckless as you think. And maybe if I can manage to learn Freeze-Dry, we can adventure together in the place you most definitely are not afraid of."
The mention of friends made Juniper flick her ears. Even if she made some, she'd undoubtedly get startled in a dungeon and they'd have to deal with her bothersome Snow Warning. As much as she hated it, she was certain she'd be a solo adventurer for the foreseeable future. But that's not a worry she wanted to dump on anyone, especially someone she didn't know well yet, so she just listened and nodded. "I hadn't realized they're so short. I could bring a couple Oran Berries and Apples and I still might be overprepared. Still can't say it's a waste, though. I'm sure they'd come in handy somewhere else."
Her eyes went wide at the mention of Fire Blast. What a powerful move! She wasn't sure why she was particularly awe-struck by the mention of it when she could learn Blizzard if she had the money, but something about it just felt immensely impressive. She really didn't want to give bad advice, though, so she left her response at "Whatever you think is best," while her tapping of her paws probably gave away her enthusiasm.
"Okay, Most Beautiful Salandit To Ever Grace This Planet, got it," she laughed. She wondered how long she could keep using that name before she forgot it. Luc, though. It was such a pretty name. That one, she'd never forget. She imagined Luc in a scarf and she poked around in them and almost melted. She couldn't remember the last time a cute girl paid this much attention to her and felt dangerously close to losing her composure for a second. "Who cares about messes?" Her voice almost cracked. C'mon, June, keep it together.... "It'd look lovely on you regardless, and cloth can be cleaned rather easily. Don't rob yourself of something you'd enjoy just because of what others might say."
Juniper picked up on Luc's serious tone and perked her ears again, eager to listen. "I suppose I never really thought of it as fun, I just wanted to help whoever I can and become strong enough to help the ones I can't. But you're right. I have more fun with it. Can't cope with such a stressful job if I'm not having fun with it." She shivered at the mention of outlaws. "Oof. Don't worry, I wont be picking those quests up. I'm not strong enough and I'm not sure I ever will be... Maybe one day."
Her paws shuffled nervously. Don't ask don't ask don't ask that is WAY too personal to ask! But she couldn't stop her curious nature. Before she fully realized it, the question was coming out of her mouth."What you said earlier... What changed for you that made you want to be a hunter rather than an explorer? It seems like it'd take an awful lot to make someone decide to risk their lives taking down criminals. I always imagined it'd be more of a career choice for experienced explorers who've gained enough strength that they're a little more certain of their own safety. I've always been curious as to why someone would start as a hunter."

❝ THROW A KICK SO QUICK THAT I LEAVE YOU IN THE GUTTER ❞
Luc let out a huffing laugh. “Do you believe everyone who has a swagger is good at what they do?” There was a slight teasing note to her voice. “Aw, I’m just joking around. But you should be sure to test people’s abilities yourself before you go around assuming that they’re as good as they say they are.” She laughed again, this time lighter, at the playful nudge. “Course, I’m sure you’ve figured out by now that I’m not all that tough. You seem smart like that. Plus, if I was that tough, what would I have to fear from Corsola Cove?” The mention of going together had Luc pausing. “Yeah, that’d be good. Always nice to go somewhere new.” Still, those water types...they gave her the willies!
“I guess so! Nice thing about ‘em is that they don’t really get useless, huh? Oran berries might not be as great once you advance a certain amount, but they’re still nice enough to carry you for quite some time!” The salandit did give Juniper a curious look at the tapping of her paws and the comment that Luc do what she think is best. “Shoot, if I did what I thought was best all the time, I’m pretty sure that I’d have met my doom at the end of a criminal at least once or twice. But thank you for saying so.” A razorsharp grin crossed her lips.
When Juniper actually called her the immensely long and troublesome flirtatious name, Luc tilted her head to the side curiously. It was nice to have her attentions appreciated. “Aw, you’re right. Once I got the cash, I should buy a scarf. Course, it’d probably get all burnt up. That’s alright, though! It’d make me look tough, wouldn’t it?” She laughed again. “Gracious, here I’ve been giving all this advice and you’ve given the most important piece of information yet. Never let others judgement be what stops you. Words to live by, if you ask me.”
The alolan vulpix’s explanation of why she chose adventuring gave Luc slight pause. “That’s awfully altruistic of you. Helping people, that is. I hope the pokemon you save sure appreciate it.” She hoped Juniper didn’t end up dying because of her advice.
Her eyes did narrow slightly at the question of what had made her change her mind. With a hefty sigh, the fire type sat down. “Well, it’s not the biggest, grandest story out there. But I’m a vengeful little shit. Pretty on the outside, yeah, but revenge is my main motivation. Not like you; you seem pretty all the way through!” She grinned, but the expression faded quickly. “Mom and Dad used to run a little cafe, back when I was young. Then someone robbed us blind. Cafe had to shut down, Mom and Dad had to go back to exploring even though they were too old. Got real hurt, and had to stop exploring. Then they were stuck taking odd jobs around town; hard to put food on the table that way.”
Luc suddenly stomped a foot. “So I decided that I wouldn’t let any other of those asses get away with stealing from hard-working, law-abiding pokemon. Don’t care if it gets me killed; I’m gonna stop everyone I can. Make ‘em change, even if they don’t want to. Course, I gotta get a little stronger for that. Someday, though, I’ll throw the biggest baddest criminals this town’s got right in their own little cell.” Her voice was a hiss by the end of her speech. Then, she was back to being friendly.
“What about you? What’s got a nice lady like you out here on her lonesome, wanting to help others?” 617 words

Juniper
'Cause I don't want you to leave I wanna tell you good dreams And with a little luck you can stay 'Cause I don't want you to leave
Juniper grinned at Luc's praise. She didn't really consider herself smart, so it was unexpected and much appreciated to hear. "How do you suggest I test your abilities, huh? You're a Fire-type, you could eat me for breakfast! All you've proven is that I was right to take your advice seriously." She met Luc's eyes and gave her a gentle smile. "Being afraid of that place doesn't say anything about how strong you are or aren't, it just tells me you have a good head on your shoulders. You know your weaknesses, and it takes a lot of strength to acknowledge something like that. Anyone can charge in there like a fool, only someone with the strength to admit their weaknesses would be responsible enough to sit back and wait until they grow stronger." She noticed Luc's pause and tentatively put a paw on her shoulder, hoping to reassure her without overstepping any boundaries. "We could go on a different adventure and never set foot in that place--believe it or not, self-preservation is a good and desirable trait. Anyone who says otherwise... really isn't cut out for dungeons." She tried to stay lighthearted, but couldn't stop herself from frowning at her last sentence. Stuff like that was just the unfortunate reality of adventuring, huh?
"I don't think I'm gonna outlevel Oran Berries anytime soon, I didn't even know they could stop being useful." She made a mental note to ask a shopkeeper about their exact effects whenever she decided to make a purchase, and went still at Luc's mention of meeting her end. Death wasn't something she liked thinking about, and it never really occured to her when she decided to become an explorer that she might have to see the death of her friends. She shook her head as if to clear her thoughts and fluffed out her fur to make herself more comfortable, she'd rather drop the thought than dwell on it or talk about it.
Juniper's eyes lit up and she nodded her head enthusiastically. "I hadn't thought about it, but yes!! That really would make you look tough, and I think it'd match you perfectly. Plus, it'd make it more unique! How often do you see Pokemon sporting burnt scarves? You might start a new trend!" She almost didn't notice the few snowflakes beginning to fall and was immediately horrified she'd let herself get worked up enough to almost activate her Snow Warning. She took deep breaths and met Luc's praise with a soft smile and a small "Thank you."
Luc's story had Juniper listening intently, although she did blush furiously at being called pretty and felt her face get so hot she wondered if she momentarily lost her Ice typing. Luc's determination was strong enough Juniper was certain every Pokemon in the marketplace could feel it. "It's horrible that anyone would do that.... If you'd ever like help handling a criminal, I'll certainly assist. Two are stronger than one, yeah? And a cause as just as that is always worth assisting." Such a serious expression looked out of place on Juniper's face. It was pretty clear she wasn't used to it. "Even if I can't help bring an outlaw to justice, I can always lend money or items for you to send home to your family. It's not fair for them to suffer."
She was caught off guard by Luc's question--it had never really occured to her that anyone would ask her about herself. She never considered herself that interesting. "Oh, it's nothing as noble as yours but I hope it helps others all the same. I grew up in the mountains to the north, and we got a lot of travelers trying to prove themselves by scaling the damn thing. They got lost or injured or ran out of supplies, and someone from our village would always guide them to the base of the mountain." She stared out to the horizon and paused for a moment to collect her thoughts. "We had more than enough guides for lost travelers, but I've always had a pretty good sense of direction and thought I was good with others, so I thought I'd put that to use somewhere where there weren't already Pokemon waiting to help. I'm not exactly doing much by staying on the mountain if there are already several Pokemon available at any given time who know the paths down as well as I do." She wasn't helping anyone here either with the lack of work she was finding, and grit her teeth at the infuriating irony. She let go of the frustration with a sigh, there was sure to be work soon enough. "We're both gonna do good things for the world. I know it."

❝ THROW A KICK SO QUICK THAT I LEAVE YOU IN THE GUTTER ❞
Juniper’s advice surprised Luc, if only because she was not used to admitting to herself that someone else had a good point. Usually, she liked to think of herself as the only one with a good head on their shoulders, but Juniper was quickly proving her wrong. Well, so far. She settled down with the realization that Juniper was much more inexperienced than her; the idea of talking to someone on equal footing with her made her uneasy. Still, there was no denying that the alolan vulpix had a point. “You’re a smart cookie, huh? I guess it’s okay to have a little dash of cowardice as long as it’s backed up by being rational.” Luc startled at the paw on her shoulder, but didn’t shrug Juniper off. She was a touchy-feely type of pokemon herself, and the gesture of friendship didn’t really bother her.
“No, I’m good with the Cove! As long as I’ve got a pretty lady with me, there’s nothing to fear, right?” If she had eyebrows, she would waggle them. Luc was very rarely serious with her flirtations, though; it was hard to be serious when you didn’t view anyone else as an equal. Still, her expression softened slightly when Juniper was excited over the idea of a scarf, though her familiar, roguish grin appeared quickly. “Yeah! I’d look like a proper badass, huh? Maybe I should get one before the tournament starts! Then everyone will know which pokemon to cheer for- me!” She strut back and forth, tail swishing as she held her head high.
Luc paused when Juniper offered her help. Then, she gave a genuine smile. “Eh, thanks! If I ever need anything frozen, I know the gal I’m gonna get!” However, the offer of items and money to her family had her shaking her head slightly. “Mom and Pop wouldn’t accept the help. They never really saw as big of an issue with the theft as I did; they figured that whoever stole from them must have really needed it. And they figure that stuff happens, so I shouldn’t base my entire life around one incident.” A bit of smoke puffed from her mouth. “I think they’re wrong about that. Don’t care how much someone might have needed the money! My family needed it too, you know?”
She fumed, but calmed slightly as Juniper explained why she had decided to become an explorer. “I knew you had a good head on your shoulders. Responsible. Reliable. All that jazz.” Luc tilted her head. “But just be sure you’re doing this because it’s what you want to do, yeah? Not because it’s what people expect of you and because it’s what you’ve been doing your entire life. Gotta make your own path, you know? Course, exploring is pretty general- there’s a lot you can do with being an explorer! Finding new places, in addition to helping people.” The salandit sounded a bit nostalgic. “That used to be my dream. Course, dreams change.”
She looked almost nervous at the mention of doing good for the world. Then, her confidence came back in a surge. “Yeah. We are.” She wasn’t sure if doing good for the world was her goal. She just wanted to lock up criminals. But, there was no reason to seem less cool and good around someone who seemed awfully impressed by her! “So,” Luc said, quick to change the subject, “after I finish this job I saw on the bulletin board, you should go adventuring with me! Aw, hell. I never even asked what you were here to buy, did I? Just started dishing out the advice!” 605 words
