fio was born the youngest of five to a lurantis couple in a remote village in the centre of a lush forest. cut off from the rest of civilisation, he grew up in a peaceful environment knowing very little of the outside world and was only able to concoct images from the fantastical stories his mother would tell him and his siblings at bedtime. ever since he was little he dreamed of venturing out from the confines of the forest and travelling every inch of the globe, often found standing near the edge of the village and staring wistfully off into the forest. unfortunately with his lack of knowledge on the reality of the outside world, his naivety made him susceptible to a certain group of bandits.
when he came of age he knew what he wanted to do. he had heard of the aestemian guild from a travelling merchant and it had immediately struck a chord with him. so his mother packed him a sack for the road and he bid farewell to his family, setting off through the forest and wandering for miles until he finally reached the open road. new territory, but he followed the signs for days until he arrived unknowingly at the mouth of the treacherous path known to the locals as the valley of tabeau.
oblivious to the valley's reputation as a mystery dungeon and established route for bandits into elysia, you could only imagine the young fomantis' terror when he was ambushed by a duo of banette. they tried to weasel him into giving up his belongings, which he adamantly refused seeing as he was carrying all of his mementos from home, but they soon grew irritable at his lack of cooperation and refusal to even grace them with words. but just as one of them was lunging to land the first attack, a third banette appeared between them. this one was odd - her pupils were weird and swirly, and one of her eyes which should have been pink was green and sightless. her accomplices seemed frustrated by the interruption - as if it was something of a regular occurrence - and after a brief battle they fled, but not without leaving the remaining banette with a ghastly scar across her shoulder that gave way to nothing but stuffing.
fio was momentarily at a loss. this scary pokémon had saved him. she looked scary, she looked shifty and cruel, and yet... she'd saved him. that was the point fio decided to toss all prejudices aside and fling himself at the pokemon with happy little babbles, the banette so evidently startled by the treatment that it soon became clear that she wasn't used to being on the receiving end of any kind of affection, but then she began to smile. sure, it was a little creepy, as per banette fashion, but surely she couldn't help it!
she introduced herself as jester and had asked his name, to which he'd proudly presented to her the little plaque of childishly scribbled 'FIO' which he'd learned to be the appropriate answer to the latter question. she'd offered to escort him the rest of the way through the valley which they did, days passing and the reserved banette gradually opening up to the little ball of sunshine, and even being so kind as to give him one of the weird sparkly things she wore! she'd said something about a 'bracelet' but it worked perfectly well as a little crown, fio had decided. soon enough they arrived in elysia and, with jester deciding she had little else to go after the scuffle with her brethren, signed up together at the hunters' guild.
