It was hard for Astroth to sleep. The sounds of the city were much too different from his home in the forest. It somewhat bothered him but not a whole lot. The thing that bugged him the most was when he looked up the stars were so faint. The torches that lined the streets blocking out their beauty.
The crowd was softer than it was during the day. The vulpix not finding himself jostled or stared at nearly as much. As much as he liked attention at the moment he wanted a place to relax at. The inn was noisy and he had yet to find a permanent residence. Though he was pondering living just outside the city and only coming in to prep and take the needed missions. It wasn't like he would be spending much time here once he started making a name for himself as a hunter.
Astroth took off down a side street that wasn't nearly as lit. The stars were brighter but the buildings blocked out most of them. Astroth sat down with a sigh staring at the sky.
"Oh, star fire, Oh, so bright, Light my way in this endless night, Light my fire with the hope and desire, Let me live a life inspired."
Astroth sang aloud. A song he had come up with long ago after finding himself. When he stopped letting others bully him and started standing on his own four paws. Only one person had ever heard him sing it and they were dead now.
"I wonder which star is mine," Astroth said to himself. Honestly, he doubted he could see it. Mainly because of the buildings. He would definitely have to get a home on the outskirts.

Iserora learned the hard way that Swablu and coffee didn't mix. For someone who rarely spoke, the bitter-scented Pokemon could hardly keep herself contained. From a long day picking Berries and handling exploration documents, Iserora decided that she'd try to enjoy the entire day, and all twenty-four hours of it. While the option remained available to Iserora, she rarely seized the opportunity. The Swablu, good at grounding herself, oft reminded herself that she had work in the morning. Tired birds weren't exactly happy birds, either, and when in a small town like Elysia, leaving home without would be a terrible misgiving. So, she pushed away stigma to buy coffee. The quiet bird could hardly stop jumping. For a few hours, the Swablu hid in a large tree to find her footing. She hoped no one saw her stumble about. Iserora was pretty sure someone thought she drank too heavily When the effects of the beverage partially subsided, the Swablu carried wings behind her rump as she bounced across a gentle street. The vibrant clouds of outer-space and the clouds of the torches intermingled and formed ephemeral shapes; with her vision, she struggled to tell the two apart. A silent reminder of quieter times, when the sky was the biggest thing looming over the people's heads instead of the mystery dungeons. Silence, once again, temporary. Iserora heard a voice. Before Iserora could see who, she couldn't tell if it were a song or a prayer. She minded neither. People did what they needed to do to keep their spirits high. The vocalist themselves, a soft-looking Vulpix, looked up at something. Something that seemed vague until they deliberated. ...wonder which star is mine ...A fun topic, to say the least. The guiding-stars brought her to the town. No use just sitting there, Iserora decided. With a glint of the eye, Iserora hopped closer, and tilted her head with a, Hm?astroth

Astroth jumped upon hearing the bird. She had been so quiet upon approaching. Though his next thought went to just how much did she hear? His fur hid the rush of blood to his face in embarrassment. He seriously hoped she didn't hear much of the song. Partially because it was a personal and partially because he wasn't sure of his singing voice.
"Uh, hi," the vulpix responded to her tilted head and questioning voice. What else could he say? He didn't want to come off as defensive but he had to know. "You didn't hear much of that did you?"
His mind was already going over the what if she did. It would be hard to explain if she asked for one. He would definitely refuse singing it again if she asked. Yet, part of him was chastising himself for worrying. The small voice of 'who cares, own yourself' popping into his head.
It relaxed him a bit. His mental chastising correcting him quite a bit. It didn't matter if she heard the song. She didn't know him and the meaning behind it lost on her. It still remained personal no matter what.
"Names Astroth," he introduced himself as he regained his composure. He stood up to get a good look at the Swablu only to notice they were roughly the same height. She looked normal for her species he guessed. He honestly hadn't met any swablu before. All the birds in his home were a mix of normal and flying.

With the Vulpix's surprised jump, Iserora jumped as well. Iserora knew that her introductions rarely lasted longer than a single word. Two, sometimes, to include the title. However, she didn't guess someone jumping as the result of one, positioning or otherwise. The blue bird figured the Vulpix would be calmer than she, although stereotypes came and went with Pokemon. Slowly, she rose a wing, and like a cirrus cloud upon a mountain, let it softly drop to suggest that hi and it's alright. Her face seemed pallid as his. To the Vulpix's inquiry, she bowed forward, and shook her head with a light hum. "Soul-searching in the starlights...and yeah. That's about it." The whole of the earlier tune, Iserora heard, though she had no clue if he had more. She put a talon forward. Truthfully, she wanted to hear more. Could tell immediately that the Vulpix had been conflicted with soething. But she refused to judge. Even if it wasn't a highest quality, Iserora believed a strange song to be worth more than one of her own boring ones. Most people could hardly pay mind to them. Spent long enough criticizing herself, Iserora did, that she almost missed the figure introducing himself. This Astroth had a celestial feel to it. Even if Astroth himself didn't seem particularly devout at a glance, the name had the same flow. It worked. "Iserora. Isa, for short. Nice to meet you." Some people would have flashed an Explorer's badge, one that Isa tucked beneath her wing. If he asked, Isa would provide it. No need to flash your credentials around to everyone you met, Isa decided. In the midst of a quiet pause, Isa decided to draw straws and pose a question. She started the conversation, so she may as well fulfill it. Wings opened some as Isa asked: "Soul-searching, too?" Isa wouldn't stay up the entire night without learning more about herself. Even if that knowledge was as little as steering clear from dark beverages. astroth

Soul-searching? Astroth was sure about that. He was simply thinking of the stars and the past. Yet he did ask that last question so many he was sort of looking for guidance. Not that he put much stock into superstitions. The idea of every pokemon having their own star was kind of romantic to him.
"I suppose," the vulpix answered casting a quick glance at the stars. "The sounds of the city are completely different from my forest home. I mainly couldn't sleep because of it."
"I thought stargazing might help me relax but... hard to see stars with the lighted streets," he would certainly have to grow used to the idea of the stars being so faint.
It was rather late now that he thought about it. Weren't most flying types day pokemon? He cast her a slightly curious glance but it really wasn't his business. Yet, he had no idea where to steer the conversation next so he problem should run with it.
"What about you? What's a lovely lady like you doing out so late at night," he questioned. He turned the attention on her hoping to shake off the vulnerable moment he had. He was unique, beautiful strong and prideful he had to remember that. He needed that air to remain above everyone else to stop others from looking down on him.

A little spiritual self-reflection couldn't hurt anyone. The little bird decided that some time ago, a time she ironically wished to speak least of all. In her dismissal, Astroth said something that rose her tuft a degree. That Astroth came from the forest caught her attention, as Iserora tapped a talon. What kind of forest? While she was, for all intents and purposes, a little town bird, she'd been kept within a Zebstrika's jog of the town. The wilds were something she read about and extrapolated upon, rarely something to venture out of. She remembered well: Not her call to go out.So of course, she was going to ask: "Woah. Haven't been out of the town much, but I'd imagine. Forgive me for being ignorant, but, which forest are you from?" The guide tried to avoid using the clinical tone she applied to charting areas. An excited mix of both vocalized, although Isa didn't seem to notice. Funny enough, for the man, he went right to flattery. The night wasn't too bad, Isa figured, if she remained in more areas. Som Isa decided to humor Astroth. Plus, it seemed this Vulpix needed the uplifting energy more than she did. As such, Isa passed a small chuckle, before sighing to the Earth. "Drank too much. So now, I'm restless." She qietly followed: "...I'm heading out to the mountains for the next few days. Figured I'd get used to seeing the moon in the meantime." She didn't disclose her job but, well, she figured Astroth could figure it out. astroth wc: 259

Out drinking before a job. Astroth had to say he didn't expect her to be a drinker. The only reason Astroth though it was a job was because of her earlier comment about not being out of town much. No reason to leave unless it was for work not unlike him. Her tone was strange but he ignored it unsure if his flattery had caused it.
"Maybe I'll visit the mountains one day as well. Fire isn't exactly strong against rocks though. You should be careful," he knew only his type advantages and disadvantages. He couldn't say for sure what she could expect strength wise. He didn't doubt he would go there one day though. He planned on visiting a lot of places. Now that he thought about it was she a hunter like him or a ranger?
He couldn't much see her as a hunter. Yet if anything she's already proven looks don't count. Let alone size not that he'd ever judge by that since he himself was so short.
"The Shifting Forest is where I'm from. Nice place, a good distance away and somewhat superstitious," he half smiled at the thought as he finally answered her question. "Apparently the place was made by a dying shiftry who buried himself there and the forest sprung out of his remains. They say the eldest tree there can grant wishes if you can find it."
An urban legend that's stood the test of time. Honestly, Astroth was roughly eighty percent sure there was no shiftry or anything like that. Let alone a tree that could grant wishes.
"I wonder what the urban legends here are," Astroth said half in thought. "I don't believe in them but they can be amusing."

Perhaps her comment about drinking had been rather on-the-nose for Astroth. Or, perhaps, on-the-beak? In any case she decided to switch that subject. He wasn't wrong about the terrain, however. If she couldn't hop away in time, she'd be subject to the terrors of the mountain. She nodded, and with a whistle, said, "Hardly budges against wind, too. Hopefully, I'll be able to reap the rewards of my ancestry before then." Dragon typing didn't seem the descent into terror some decried it as. It just marked a more potent source of power. Isa also hoped to keep her head together. Which would be truth, but as far as her execution went, was in shambles. Here before the traveler, Isa seemed more clueless than he. Even with the coffee, she should've held together better than that! Who knew if the man was involved in her profession. It did lead to an obvious question, however: "You travel often. What do you do?"Even as a chick, Isa heard many a tale about the city. Some, she knew, were just vehicles for social norms. Others were far more intriguing, playing the best of her emotions. That of the Shifting Forest seemed. "Nifty. Must have had a fair share of visitors, with a claim like that." A faint smile. She figured she'd go ahead. "As for me? Lived almost my whole life in Elysia. Hardly got a chance to leave." Isa looked over her wing before she continued. "Lot to talk about for a village this size. Even ignoring the, well, the Outlaw bulletin." She chirped. "Ever since the Mystery Dungeons started grabbing headlines and bad weather became prevalent, some of the townsfolk offer small change to the sea, to be showered in gold on another rainy day." While not truly impossible, it required knowledge of phenomena beyond Isa's areas expertise. But, she played to the legend itself: "...maybe I shouldn't call that a legend, because I've seen it work. Ocean only pays in sand dollars, though." Bad.

Astroth gave a small snort at her joke breaking into a smile. He wasn't sure if the legend she just said was true but it put a smile on his face. So she'd lived here her whole life. Admittedly he would probably still be in his forest if not for that single outlaw.
"We got quite a few. Not many stuck around after a few days though. Like finding a needle in a haystack. The only way you're finding it is if it pokes you and not the other way around," he said smiling mainly because its true. No way anyone could find the elder tree among so many other trees.
"Can't say much about ancestry myself but I do hope you find what you're looking for," Astroth said truly meaning it. "As for me, I'll be growing stronger by hunting outlaws. It is the reason I came to this place to become a hunter. Gotta kill them before they kill you and all that."
"Just a bonus I get to protect others in the process. Better than becoming just a pure ruffian," Astroth didn't want to be known as just a punk. If he was going to be anything he wanted to be something that inspired awe and respect.
"What about you," he questioned. He still doubted she was a hunter.

As Astroth found happiness, Isa joined him. Life was too short, after all, to meander in judgement. It seemed Astroth went by a similar philosophy, or at least mirrored hers for now. She did admit clearly how limited she felt within the gates and how excited she was to meet the foreign Pokemon, so perhaps it came naturally as explorers to this forest. "And so the dead live on." A hum. It certainly made for an interesting folktale, and a region to explore in due time. Soft hum and a, "Thank you, and to you too." followed a comment about ancestry. Isa had to be fair, since her ancestry wasn't much to begin with. She hardly knew her father, who'd always been out working. Her mother hardly exercised her Dragon typing. She didn't take Astroth as a hunter-type, although it seemed more and more clear as time passed. He spoke clearly enough. His focus was on-point. Perhaps the surprise earlier got to him. "Not easy work. I wouldn't mind occasionally, but chasing criminals sounds hard to judge. Good luck" She didn't have much need to head-hunt, though she certainly knew there were times one had to use their claws, talons, and teeth to end a dispute. She just didn't like when those times came up. Messy. As for her own job? Well, she paused and looked away for a moment. "Explorer, but more specialized I guesss." A pause and a tap of the foot followed. "I survey for the Guild. I'd call it cartography, except it's never the same. Keeps you on your feet, since you never know how it's going to turn out. Now that I'm on field missions it's..."She didn't quite finish her sentence. A fairly chipper attitude could have written it for her. WC: 300 astroth

"Thanks," Astroth said in response to her good luck. It was as he had guessed she was an explorer. However, he had little notion of what cartography was. Surveying though he could somewhat guess about that.
Like she went out asking questions about places and finding answers. Probably like what pokemon lived there. Still a dangerous job if they weren't too friendly but he didn't imagine too many pokemon being unkind to the woman.
"It's difficult," he finished with a questioning tone. "I'll be experiencing my first dungeon tomorrow myself. I've heard the stories and even then I can't imagine what its like. Magical stairs that drop you randomly in a place you've never been before."
"There got to be a pattern to it. Yet even the experienced hunters I spoke with said there isn't one," he shook his head. He had no idea what to make of it all.
"Bah, I'm doing it for the fights. All that other stuff is way too complicated and goes right over my head. Sometimes even hitting it hard enough to give headaches," he smiled slightly at his joke. "I try not to think about it too much. Go in do what you have to and get out. Best way to keep your sanity I think."

From this sense of adventure, of seeing the face of a Mystery Dungeon, Isa felt a connection form. The fact that the two's jobs were very, very different didn't mean the fear of the unknown garnered a different response. The stairs that took people anywhere, certainly earned the mystery adjective. But as to the defeatist inquiry, Isa posed a general solution: "There's a lot of theory floating around, but from what I guess, there's a pattern. It just has less to do with the space itself, and more with what's actually within the area. Flora, Pokemon, treasure. That kind of stuff." Isa looked up. Should she start with the Badge? The methods and writing? The long list of dangers that waited within? She instead tried to wrap herself up. "I'm pretty sure there's more to it than that, but..." Wings shrugged. Never had Isa met someone so keen on roughing up with the Dungeon Pokemon or themselves. Her distance from violent conflict led her to pose a curious question: "Had to fight a lot in the Outer Reaches?" Anything Iserora said would be disingenuous to her relatively peaceful lifestyle. There were scuffles here and there with locals, but nothing to knock someone out. Death was practically unheard of, besides the debt she spent so long working off. Having the spite of angry Pokemon made that a lot harder to bear. Perhaps she should have taken an approach like Astroth's, and simply done her job. Find out what the Pokemon want later. Ignore the possibility of her work going hay-wire. Given the legends surrounding the angry Pokemon, and Isa might just have to. Images of bloodied wings made for a more distant songbird. Astroth pondered her solution. A pattern in the flora, pokemon and treasure? Well, pokemon tend to rotate towards areas that fit their lifestyle. You wouldn't see an oddish on a mountain after all. So he could see that; he didn't know about flora though. The grass looked generally the same and so did trees. He definitely couldn't imagine much of a pattern there.
"Let's just say I grew up to own myself,"Astroth said as she asked if his home was big on fighting. "It wasn't really that dangerous unless you wanted it to be. For me, it was all about proving myself."
Also defending his now dead lover. Though she didn't need to know that. No one did as far as he was concerned. It was all left behind so he could try and rebuild his life.
"Now, its all about fame and awe. I want the world to look at me with respect and nod their heads as I pass approving of my stature," he said not the least bit humble about it.
"I mean I won't be a complete douche but it'd be nice to be looked up to," Astroth said toning it back a bit. "Big-headed pokemon can fall really hard." He knew that from experience from him and his partner taking down a snob and his goons long ago.

Isa got about the answer she expected. To fight, to enter combat, marked a touchy subject in her family tree. Turns out Grandpa Lydel came to Elysia after razing property, and the guilt hung around his neck like an obese Skarmory. Should she have looked back further, and years of quarrel likely followed her bloodline. To fight involved an emotional disturbance that she didn't desire to tap into, even if it may well have been necessary to finish the job. Wild Pokemon, no matter how much she tried to avoid stereotypes, weren't exactly well-known for their civility. To Astroth's point, Isa hummed in agreement. Astroth didn't provide much she could disagree on. But perhaps one thing she didn't expect to agree on, involved Astroth's point on self-image. No kidding, Who knows how many greats fell to the wayside because they simply didn't market themselves enough. Such an image proved taxing to the mind, heart, and soul. She hummed more gently than the last, as if conceding to that fact. Still, she smiled. Recognition is nice. "Yeah. Being recognized is a nice feeling." Distant speech left Isa speaking distantly, as if reaching for the moon. She didn't live to turn heads. She woke up in the early morning, worked, ate, worked more and slept. While her work as a surveyor internally fulfilled her curiosities, she would've liked to build a fun character for herself. She would've wanted to look into the dungeons. And until she got her license to delve, she would've been bound to mundanity, forever. Big-headed Pokemon? Astroth probably meant that metaphorically, though her curiosity still piqued her. While typically averse to stories of battle, the kind of person that'd get hunted always offered an interesting story. So, she agreed, and then asked: "Definitely. That balance can't be easy to upkeep."Indirectly asked, but nonetheless. WC: 309 astroth

"Yeah, I suppose it is. I mean doing it cause it feels good is one thing but becoming a dick because of it. There's no excuse," Astroth said in response. He wanted to be true to himself always and part of him was still that shy vulpix everyone picked on and made him feel unwanted. He knew both sides and he knew how he had felt so he was going to be damned sure he wouldn't end up like them.
Her soft-spoken words had him cocking his head though. Was she not used to being in the spotlight herself? Not all that uncommon though when he thought about it. Still, someone like her should be hella proud.
"You know I'll never be able to do what you do. You are quite the special pretty bird. I'm sure you steal the hearts of everyone you pass. You just got to own your fluff," he complimented with a smile. She'd probably evolve to be beautiful as well. Though he couldn't rightfully say since he'd never seen her kind before.
"These eyes of mine are my curse and my blessing," Astroth said raising his head proudly to show them off. "All the haters be picking on me because of them. They were just jealous cause they are beautiful."
"Trust me they got nothing on me and they got nothing on you. Own up to your smarts and your beauty. Cause it's rare to have both," he smiled at her his six tails waving slightly.
