He's at his most relaxed when he's keeping busy, and he'll often take up odd jobs in-between guild missions just to keep himself busy. This is primarily because being focused on a task sort of takes Emmett outside himself, and just sitting around and being alone with his thoughts is the last thing that he wants. He's spent most of his life at the bottom of a mineshaft with nobody but himself, and that's not an experience he's eager to get back to. More than that, though, it's out of a genuine desire to help and be useful to people. Emmett's of the belief that everyone could use a hand now and then, no matter how they might actually feel about it. This, combined with his not-so-keen observational skills and tendency to fixate on certain tasks, means that his idea of "help" doesn't always line up with what's actually required. Setbacks like that almost never keep him down for long, though, and he's always ready to try again given a little time. You could say the word "defeat" isn't in his vocabulary, but you'd have to include a lot of other words too, because he's not terribly bright. Which isn't to say he's a moron, just that he likes to take things at his own pace, and the way his thought processes work often lead him to some weird conclusions. This also means he's a terrible liar, which is fine by him, because he's never had any reason to lie before. Emmett is earnest to his core, and everything he says and does he believes in 100%. He also expects this from everyone else, which means he's extremely easy to fool, but he's not too down about that. [attr="class","titeidol"]history The vast majority of Emmett's past is a mystery even to him, and in all honesty he'd prefer to keep it that way, since the few parts he can recall don't bode well. He remembers long stretches of time passing in the darkness, unable to move, too heavy to dig himself out of the dry, rocky soil. He remembers trying to mark the passage of days as best he could, scoring tally marks into his arms and torso with a sharp stone that, though faded, are still clearly visible. He remembers the panic and the fear and the frustration, the dawning realization that nobody was coming to help no matter how loud he yelled. The quiet resignation. A long sleep. They found him half-buried in a side tunnel in an abandoned mine up on Skypoint. His eyelights had gone dark, and after they'd dragged him out of the dirt they'd had to roll him back down the mountain. Too heavy to carry, they said, and in hindsight maybe they were just too lazy to do it right but Emmett doesn't mind either way. The Guild cared for him as long as they could. Feeding was a problem, what with him being unconscious and not having a visible mouth, but they managed it. It took round about a month for him to finally come to, confused and weak. He told them his name was Emmett, and that was all he knew. He joined the explorers as soon as he was in fighting shape. It was his own way of showing gratitude, seeing as how they'd basically saved his life and all. Trying to re-acclimate to life on the surface has had its ups and downs, but overall it's a whole lot better than lying insensate at the bottom of a hole for who knows how long.
